Background of the study
Allophonic variation refers to the subtle differences in sound production that occur within a single phoneme without changing meaning. In the Hausa language spoken in Maiduguri, these variations are influenced by regional, social, and contextual factors (Okafor, 2023). This study evaluates the acoustic properties of allophonic variations in Hausa by analyzing consonant and vowel production through spectrographic techniques. By comparing different speaker groups and speech contexts, the research aims to document the range of allophonic variation and assess its impact on intelligibility and language perception. Factors such as speech rate, stress, and coarticulation are considered to understand how these variations emerge and function within the linguistic system (Ibrahim, 2024). The findings will contribute to phonetic theory and inform language teaching practices by highlighting the natural variability in Hausa speech, thereby supporting efforts to develop more accurate speech recognition systems and pronunciation training modules (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite its importance, allophonic variation in the Hausa language in Maiduguri is poorly documented. Variability in sound production can lead to misperceptions and communication challenges, particularly in formal settings (Okafor, 2023). The absence of detailed acoustic data on these variations limits the development of effective language teaching strategies and speech technology solutions. This study seeks to address this gap by providing systematic acoustic evidence on allophonic variation, thereby contributing to improved phonetic models and instructional methodologies.
